Three Emirati engineers got technical when they were selected to take part in an international internship program at BAE Systems in the UK to enhance their engineering skills.

The future engineering leaders - Rakan Al Ameri, Faris Al Kaabi and Abdulla Al Shehhi - were sent to BAE Systems’ Military Air and Information business division in North West England for an 18-week internship.

During the course of the program, the students got a head start in their career as they were put into a real-life work environment at the defence, aerospace and security company.

They got involved in various activities such as the integration of a robotics system for manufacturing tasks and the deployment of augmented reality technology.

Intern Rakan Al Ameri said: “I gained new skills and was able to familiarize myself with aerospace technologies, as well as to build upon my material engineering background around the aerospace industry.

“I’m so glad to be part of such an amazing opportunity and it will definitely add potential value towards my future career.”

In addition to the practical work, the students were given academic and career guidance tips by BAE Systems’ aerospace and engineering experts to help them excel back in the UAE.

Faris Al Kaabi said: “I’m really pleased to have secured an internship. It was a unique experience and great to be a part of, especially since the internship is in line with the vision of Abu Dhabi to develop the UAE’s knowledge based economy.”

This year marks the second intake of a five-year internship organised by Mubadala and BAE Systems. The program is supported by the Abu Dhabi Education Council.

Homaid Al Shimmari, Mubadala, Chief Executive Officer, Aerospace & Engineering Services, said: “Mubadala is committed to encouraging UAE youth to learn new skills and participate in educational initiatives.

“Our partnership with BAE Systems helps to provide future leaders with a refined skill set and enables them to have a strong focused approach to learning and innovation. These factors lie at the very heart of the nation’s vision for the future – a young, vibrant population that contributes to the ongoing development of our society.”
