In manifestation of the true historical and environmental values of the UAE, Sowwah Island has been renamed as Al Maryah Island.
The new name reflects the drive of renaming areas with authentic denotations in Abu Dhabi Emirate. Al Maryah denotes a village that has a very long history in Liwa Oasis, Abu Dhabi Emirate, inhabited by abundant numbers of Purebred Arabian Oryx called “Al Maryah”. The place was dotted with springs of fresh water and various species of birds.
The name also illustrates the deeply rooted belonging of the UAE and its peoples to their natural environment, as well as their authenticity, true historical values and glorious heritage. The linguistic origin of the word Maryah is derived from the word “Marj” and “Al Marijah”; which is meadows with greens and various types of flora as well as different forms of wildlife, and desert terrain featuring autonomous local animals.
