CENTRE WILL RELOCATE TO NEW PURPOSE-BUILT FACILITY IN ZAYED SPORTS CITY
The Abu Dhabi Knee & Sports Medicine Centre (ADKSMC), established by Mubadala Development Company (Mubadala) in 2006, is about to embark on a second phase in its development. The exciting expansion plans will see the specialist centre relocate to a brand new, state-of-the-art 45 bed facility in Zayed Sports City.
ADKSMC is the first healthcare facility in the Middle East to specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with knee and sports-related injuries. Knee injuries are one of the most common musculoskeletal problems experienced in the region and there has been significant demand from police, military personnel, athletes and the general public for the clinical expertise offered by its team of internationally-renowned physicians.
In 2007, ADKSMC conducted over 570 surgical procedures. Due to its significant operational success, there is a great demand for the Centre to expand into a purpose-built facility. Plans are now underway to develop a new building to accommodate Phase II of the project.
The facility forms part of Mubadala Healthcare’s integrated healthcare delivery network of general and multi-specialty hospitals, specialty centres of excellence, clinical support services and primary care/GP clinics that will be linked by state-of-the-art IT systems and technologies to provide a seamless and high-quality patient experience. As one of several centres of excellence created by Mubadala Healthcare, ADKSMC combines international expertise with excellent facilities to offer world-class clinical care.
It is uniquely positioned to provide comprehensive medical care from first consultation and diagnosis to surgery, rehabilitation and recovery. Under the leadership of Dr Charles Brown Jr., the Centre offers the latest advances in rehabilitation and surgical techniques including arthroscopically-assisted ACL surgery, meniscus preservation, articular cartilage repair, minimally invasive knee replacement surgery, and arthroscopic and open shoulder procedures. It is also the first facility in the Middle East to have a Tissue Bank, where fresh-frozen bone and soft tissue grafts are stored for use in knee ligament surgery.
At ADKSMC, particular emphasis is placed on pain management, and treatment is based on the concept that sports rehabilitation, fitness and cardiovascular conditioning must go hand in hand in order to return individuals to their pre-injury states. The new facility is due to open in mid 2009 and will be located in the redeveloped Zayed Sports City Complex, adjacent to several other sports facilities and athletic fields.
While ADKSMC will continue to serve its existing patients in the region, it will also be ideally positioned to provide treatment to the sporting community. “The expansion and relocation of Abu Dhabi Knee & Sports Medicine Centre to Zayed Sports City is testament to its first year of operational success and the dedication and expertise of Dr Charles Brown and his team, who have been the driving forces behind this outstanding achievement,” said Mark Erhart, Executive Director of Mubadala Healthcare. “This facility is a perfect example of our goal to create a robust private healthcare infrastructure for the region.” “We are very pleased to be able to treat even more patients at this new facility,” said Dr. Charles Brown Jr., Director of ADKSMC. “This is excellent news for the future of healthcare provision in Abu Dhabi and we are looking forward to the next stage in ADKSMC’s development.”
