Imperial College London is consistently rated among the world’s leading universities, with a 107-year legacy in sciences and innovation, and a reputation for excellence in teaching and research.
Addressing the high prevalence of diabetes in the UAE is a primary focus of Mubadala Healthcare, which, through its partnership with ICL, has been able to provide specialized diabetes care to more Emirati and UAE patients now, than ever before.
In 2014, the International Diabetes Federation ranked the UAE 16th globally in diabetes prevalence, with an estimated 19 percent of the UAE population living with diabetes. This represented a modest improvement from its 15th place ranking in 2013. It is this critical need for specialized diabetes care which underpinned Mubadala’s agreement with the UK’s ICL in 2004. The foundation of this agreement is mutual cooperation in the fields of education, healthcare, research and development with the aim of helping to stimulate the development of diabetes care in the country.
The first initiative to emerge from this partnership was Abu Dhabi’s Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC), established in May 2006 as a collaboration between Mubadala Healthcare and ICL. The flagship Abu Dhabi location was soon followed by the opening of a second facility in Al Ain in 2011; together, the centers offer more diabetes specialists and subspecialists than any other diabetes treatment facility in the UAE, and have provided world-class diabetes care to more than 200,000 patients since inception. Both facilities are wholly owned by Mubadala.
ICLDC’s public health awareness campaigns have also raised national awareness about diabetes, its symptoms, and ways to prevent its onset. “Diabetes-Knowledge-Action” was launched in 2007 under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, and includes more than 200,000 participants across its activity programs. ICLDC’s annual walk, now in its eighth year, saw more than 21,000 participants in 2014, up from 17,000 in 2012.
Through its work in treatment and prevention, ICLDC supports Mubadala Healthcare’s vision to create a thriving healthcare sector in Abu Dhabi, enabling the UAE community to receive world-class specialized healthcare locally and reduce their need to travel abroad for treatment.
