There was only one place in the UAE where youngsters could do scientific experiments, learn about Emirati heritage, and get fit and healthy. That was the Zayed Sports City Family Festival, which was held from December 24-27.

Supported by Mubadala Investment Company, the festival was a free way for families to have fun during the winter break. There were more than 15 science workshops, plus performers, sports games, stage entertainment, and even a visit by a pro tennis player.

The popular event was held at Zayed Sports City, the home of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship (MWTC).

To celebrate the tennis theme, the world number 10, Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, made a special visit to sign autographs, while mini courts were set up for visitors to test their skills.

The workshop stations included everything from Lego challenges to fitness obstacle courses to presentations on traditional Emirati basket-making and embroidery.

There was also a strong science theme thanks to the Nutty Professors workshops. Hundreds of kids took part in practical experiments that taught them about hydraulics, chemistry, planting seeds, and how light is reflected in periscopes.

The popular character Mansour also featured at the festival, with games and activities that encouraged kids to make healthy lifestyle choices.

And to round off an action-packed week, a spectacular fire show was held on the big stage, followed by a dramatic show with liquid nitrogen.

Tune into Weyana for our coverage of the MWTC. And if you’re interested in science, check out our video on the Abu Dhabi Science Festival.
