The Genes in Space results are out, which means one budding scientist is a step further in reaching their dream of working in the space industry.

Dubai based student, 14-year-old Alia Almansoori, who attends Al Mawakeb School in Al Barsha, was announced winner of the second intake of the Genes in Space competition after presenting her experiment to a panel of judges.

Alia’s winning proposal focused on studying protein expression changes that might help protect astronauts from unwanted cell death.

She said: “I have always been interested in the field of space through reading a number of space encyclopedias and stories such as Star Wars. This award has encouraged me to study sciences in order to achieve my dream and enter the space sector.”

Her win granted her a chance to work at miniPCR, in order to prepare her experiment for space. Alia will also travel to the US to watch her experiment launch to the International Space Station (ISS). This is where the experiment will be tested by astronauts on board the using miniPCR technology.

"I’ve always been interested in space, it’s my dream to be an astronaut,” she said. “When I go to Mars, hopefully I’ll be taking an Emirati flag with me and I’ll be planting it on the planet."

Genes in Space is a partnership between the UAE Space Agency, The National, and Boeing.
