Young people tackling the issue of sustainability during the latest round of the Youth Circle were joined by two very special guests – none other than the UK’s Prince Charles and HE Shamma Al Mazroui, Minister of State for Youth Affairs.

Organized by the UAE’s Ministry of State for Youth, the Youth Circle initiative is a series of discussion panels aimed at involving young people in the community to talk about important issues, both locally and globally.

The most recent panel was held at Abu Dhabi’s Masdar Institute to debate the subject: “Engaging and Empowering Youth for a Sustainable Future”.

Participants in this Youth Circle had the opportunity of a lifetime to voice their ideas and concerns towards a sustainable future to the Prince of Wales and HE Shamma Al Mazroui.

The event kicked off with an opening introduction by HE Shamma Al Mazroui in which she said: “It is only fitting to have a conversation with, by and for our youth, because they are the future carriers and the future engineers of sustainability.”

As expected, there was no shortage of ideas and opinions. Everything from campaign proposals, youth engagement initiatives to daily tips on green living were brought forward by the circle’s insightful minds.

One of the issues raised during the forum was by panel member, Fatima Al Shamsi, who tackled the topic of sustainability at home.

“We need to learn to not only endorse the go green initiative at work and school, but also make it a habit to incorporate these small changes into our daily activities at home.”

Another proposal was to set up an online youth forum targeted at Emirati youth. The online portal would serve as a platform for youth to openly share and discuss ideas regarding the country’s development among the community.

Prince Charles was impressed by the panel’s determination to promote change, commending them on their knowledge, ideas and commitment.

“It’s fascinating hearing some of your perspective on some of these very important issues around sustainability amongst young people,” he said.

With Prince Charles himself being a strong advocate for sustainability and youth and the patron of many charitable organizations, there is no better compliment than that.
