The Barka II Power Plant is located approximately 50km northwest of Muscat, in the Sultanate of Oman. The capacity of the power plant is 678 MW. The project also includes a desalination plant with capacity of 26.4 million gallons of potable water per day. The power plant comprises three V 94.2 dual-fuel gas turbines, three supplementary fired heat recovery steam generators and two condensing steam turbine generators. The water plant utilizes reverse osmosis technology to convert seawater to drinking water.
Full commercial operation of the plant was achieved in November 2009. The power and water generated is sold to OPWP, the state-owned Omani utility, under a long-term power and water purchase agreement ending in 2024. In October 2011, SMN Power Holding (the holding company for the Barka II Power Plant) was successfully listed on the Muscat Stock Exchange.
